K2—a giant mountain peak— was an unfulfilled dream to me. I had only seen the pictures of huge mountain peaks before, but the first glimpse of K2 was jaw dropping. Located in the vicinity of Shigar—one of the scenic districts in Baltistan— K2 made every other single thing around it tiny and unnoticeable. As compared to other mountain peaks in Gilgit Baltistan, K2 is notoriously difficult to climb, still its alluring beauty draws tourists from around the world. For me, this was not just a normal journey. It was a most awaited trip; my friends and I were planning for ages. I was not there to summit the Savage Mountain. As a traveler, I enjoyed the scenic landscapes of Shigar and the bumpy routes till the base camp.

The Journey Begins: Into the Karakoram
Planning a trip with friends is quite hectic. If you are organizing a trip with your friends give them a fake start time. I usually tell mine to be ready two hours early. It saves the schedule, saves my sanity, and keeps the trip moving. Our journey started with the world’s most scenic flight—from Islamabad to Skardu—a 45- minutes journey to the paradise. If you are travelling to Skardu by air and not booking a window seat is a waste of money. Baltistan has five main districts with Skardu serving as its administrative capital. We spend our first night in one of the hotels in Skardu. Next morning, we packed up and headed out for Shigar. The journey from Skardu to Shigar is short but incredibly scenic. On our way to Shigar we stopped by the Shigar Bridge to admire the beauty of mighty Indus River. Our next destination was Askole, the final village in the district Shigar, before the trek begins. It took around one and a half to reach here from Skardu. Beyond this point, there are no roads—only trails carved through rock, ice, and time. As we stepped onto the vast expanse of the Baltoro Glacier, I realized this wasn’t going to be an ordinary trek.Baltoro Glacier, is located in the Karakoram ranges which is one of the largest non-polar glaciers stretched endlessly over 60 kilometers of ice and stone. It serves as the major route to the K2. Walking on this glacier feels like stepping onto another planet. The terrain changed daily, moving from needle-sharp peaks to bizarre geological formations. But the constant was the silence—a deep, heavy quiet that echoed through the valley
Concordia: Where Giants Gather
After days of trekking, we reached Concordia and I realized that the “Throne Room of the Mountain Gods” is not just a nickname— it’s a reality. Standing there, surrounded by some of the highest peaks in the world, including Broad Peak and the Gasherbrum massif, I felt incredibly small. And then, there it was—K2. Unlike other mountains, K2 doesn’t slowly reveal itself. It appears suddenly, sharply, like a blade cutting through the sky. Its pyramid shape makes it look almost unreal, as if it doesn’t belong to some other universe.
Facing the Savage Reality
For a trekker, the brutality of K2’s environment was impossible to ignore. The weather was constantly changing—clear skies turning into biting winds and freezing temperatures. At base camp, it was around -20°C at night, but higher up, they drop below -50°C. While we shivered in -20°C nights, we looked up at a summit where winds reach speeds of over 200 km/h and the air is thin enough to kill. Hearing stories about the dangerous 'Bottleneck' and the high death rate was a reality check. It made me realize that you don’t go to K2 to challenge it; you go there to respect it.
The People of the Mountains
The people of Baltistan is as beautiful as K2. Their hospitality is famous all around the world. The Balti porters and guides, who carried loads across impossible terrain, moved with quiet strength and resilience. For them especially people from Shigar, this land isn’t extreme—it’s home. They shared stories, laughter, and simple meals with us. Despite the harsh conditions, there was warmth in their hospitality. It reminded me that travel is not just about places—it’s about connections. Being a tourist, one should contribute to preserve the beauty of the region
Final Thoughts: More Than Just a Destination
K2 is more than just a mountain; it’s a symbol of nature’s raw power and beauty. My journey to K2 was not about conquering the peak but about experiencing its majesty and respecting its dangers. It taught me humility, resilience, and the importance of preserving such incredible places for future generations. If you ever get the chance to visit K2, go with an open heart and a deep respect for the mountain and its people. It’s an experience that will stay with you forever.
